Deaf people to be able to text for help during emergency

D.N.I.S. News Network, India: Delhi Police is planning to launch a helpline service where one could send a text message (S.M.S.) for help during emergency. This will especially help deaf people who till now were not able to access the existing emergency helpline number ‘100’. This new step comes after a deaf person wrote to the Delhi Police on the issue.

According to reports, Delhi Police is now checking feasibility and technical issues related to such a helpline number. This number is likely to be connected to computers which will flash when any text message is received. The helpline will be a five digit number and will have five parallel lines. The number of lines could be increased in the future. There will also be a special team to monitor the messages and respond to them.

Until the helpline is operational, deaf people in Delhi can text at 9818099050.
