Karnataka H.C. dismisses plea of disabled girl for seat in professional course

D.N.I.S. News Network – In a negative turn of events, the Karnataka High Court dismissed a petition by a physically disabled candidate claiming that she was not allotted a seat in a professional college under the disability quota.

Aishwarya S. Karishankari, a native of Bagalkot, stated that the State Government had issued a notification on 28 February 2006, inviting applications for the Common Entrance Test (C.E.T.) for admissions to professional courses such as engineering and medicine. The test was conducted for those applying for the Government quota in engineering colleges and she had appeared for the examination.

Bagalkot Hospital issued a disability certificate to Aishwarya. Thus she was entitled to a Government seat under the physically disabled quota. On June 26, counselling for seats started at the C.E.T. Cell. Although the process began with allotment of seats for the physically disabled, the authorities claimed that Aishwarya was not eligible for a seat under the quota. But the student stated that, of the 129 seats reserved for the physically disabled, only 62 seats had been filled up and the remaining had been transferred to the general category.
